Many people are interested in getting into the entertainment industry, and with so many different television stations and programs there is always a high demand for new talent. If you, as an actor, also happen to have a flair for creating fantastic dishes in the kitchen, you may want to consider pursuing a career that combines both talents, and try to become a television cooking host. Although a difficult career in which to succeed, it can be highly rewarding for someone with the right motivation.
An important factor to remember is that cooking on television is very different than cooking in your own kitchen at home. Being a television chef requires almost as much skill with teaching as it does with cooking. When you have a studio audience, and you are being filmed, you need to be able to over explain each step in your cooking process, no matter how simple, so that everyone watching can learn from your instruction. In addition, filming a cooking show requires multiple takes, just like any other TV show.
This means that the host must be able to prepare the same dish over and over again, as the film crew works to get the best shots. A single half hour cooking program will quite often take as much as two to three hours to film. Also, once the first recipe is prepared and the filming is complete, it’s often time to change wardrobe and go back out to film another episode. Several episodes can be filmed back to back this way, which is most effective in terms of overhead for the production company.
Another thing to keep in mind is how difficult it can be to achieve recognition on a public level in this field. While there are definitely many different cooking shows on several channels, and even entire stations devoted to cooking shows, each of those shows already have a host. These various hosts all worked their way up slowly, showing flair for both cooking and television, networking with various people in the industry, paying their dues as it were.
This process often takes years, and for every person who eventually has a hit cooking show, there are dozens if not hundreds of hopefuls trying to get noticed. A lot of these potential stars work behind the scenes on various shows, helping to prepare larger quantities of the dish the host is preparing on stage.
If none of this has deterred you, there are some excellent benefits if you reach your goal and have your own cooking show. Your name will become known in restaurants and kitchens all over the world, and you will be at least moderately recognizable in public as a result. You will be able to create and market your own line of cooking products, which is really only limited by your imagination. You can eventually publish cookbooks with your own spin on classic recipes, and new favorites of your own design!
